Chapter 35

Evelyn finished eating and was looking at her notes. There were questions she needed answered. How close were the deacons? When she’d first joined the church, Deacon Jackson and Deacon Woods were assigned as her prayer partners. They called her once a week for prayer. They were both active in the church, but they were different from the other deacons. They were younger and seemed to really enjoy life. The older deacons were stern and pompous. Deacons Jackson and Woods were friendly, especially with the youth and the single ladies. It didn’t matter that they were married. Apparently, their wives didn’t have a problem with it either.

The phone rang. Cory and Amos had just returned from police headquarters and wanted to talk to her. Even though it was late, she agreed since they were so young. After a few minutes, she heard a knock. When Cory and Amos came inside, she noticed both of them had been crying. They looked like scared little boys.

“Sister Jenkins,” Cory said, “we just came back from the police department. Suppose whoever killed Deacon Woods is after us?”

Hugging them, she said, “Boys, I know you’re scared, but I really don’t believe we’re in danger. The police would have kept us if we were.”

“I’m afraid to call my parents. I’ve kept the phone off because I don’t know what they’re going to do when they hear about Deacon Woods. Can you please call them?”

“Certainly, I’ll call them right now.”

The phone rang once and immediately Cory’s mother answered. “Sister Jenkins, where’s Cory? Is he all right? Where is he? I need to speak to him now!” She sounded frantic.

“He’s fine. He’s standing next to me.

“Let me talk to him NOW!” Evelyn handed the phone to Cory.

“Hi Mom.” When he heard his mother crying, he began to cry. It took a few minutes but he finally told her he was OK. He tried to explain everything. When he told her Deacon Woods was dead, Evelyn heard her scream. His mother told him they would be on the next flight there. Later Evelyn found out they hadn’t met with Pastor Watson because they had been out of town.

Finally, Cory handed the phone back to Evelyn. She tried to assure his mother he would be safe and asked them to call Pastor Watson, who was aware of the situation. They were shocked that the Pastor knew what happened. But he’d be able to calm their fears and perhaps they could help with the choir when they came to Las Vegas. Both parents agreed and said they were calling Pastor Watson.

Amos was patiently waiting and watching. Afterwards, Evelyn called his grandmother to assure her he was safe. As expected, she was quite upset. She was eighty, and not physically able to travel. Pastor Watson had already come by and told her about the murder. She made Evelyn promise to look after Amos and return him home safe. Evelyn promised.

Cory said, “Thank you, Sister Jenkins. The police searched our room.”

“I think they searched all our rooms.
